(***Giveaway has ended***)
When I was pregnant, I loved talking to my belly. I’d describe to our BabyBug what I was doing, what was exciting, what was scary, where we were in our development, etc.
I danced with her, sang to her and kept her close to my heart. And nothing has changed now that my Bug is on the outside. Thanks in large part to babywearing.
I own — and use nearly every day — two carriers: a Moby wrap and an Ergobaby carrier. The Moby is perfect for when I need to send emails, work on my blog, etc. I’m able to hold Audrey super close while still using my hands and arms. However, I find it very difficult to get her into properly (user error, compounded by the amount of fabric to deal with) so if she’s short on patience, it’s a disaster. I also never quite feel comportable with going totally hands-free with the Moby, and end up keeping my arms very close to her.
Enter: the Ergo. I had this carrier on my must-have list all throughout pregnancy, so when the company asked me to be an official blog reviewer, I felt incredibly lucky. Those fabulous folks sent me the navy blue organic Bundle of Joy version, including the infant insert, which allowed me to use it immediately (Audrey first went in when she was less than 2 weeks old).
The Ergo truly is amazing. It’s pretty easy to put on, although I suggest doing a dry run with a stuffed animal or pillow first. You just snap the waist strap on and adjust it, then load baby in, finally securing her with the chest and shoulder straps. I worried that it would be hard to use without help, but it’s very simple and super secure — I put Audrey in, grab a broom and happily spend an hour or so doing chores with her just cooing or napping inside.
Now that she is a month old, I have taken out the little bolster that goes at the bottom of the infant insert — she’s too tall for it! — but we’ll be using the insert itself for a while. It’s essentially an internal swaddle that tucks baby in and gives her an added layer of protection and security while she’s in the main carrier. Eventually, we’ll drop that part as well, but since the carrier is safe for up to 45 pounds, I definitely think this will be getting a lot of use in the next couple of years.
The Ergo also has two features that I love — the outside pocket, which is perfect for holding my phone (I put the WhiteNoise app on and Audrey falls right asleep), keys, etc., and the hood which can go over baby’s little head with plenty of breathing room.
For now, we have only used the Ergo in its front position, but I’m looking forward to the other two positions: front and hip (the Moby also has multiple positions and I am sure that it’s going to be easier to use once Audrey is a little bigger).
And THANK GOODNESS the Ergo is machine washable, because the second time I used it, Audrey spit up everywhere…I freaked out! But I just stuck it in the machine (following the instructions — very important) and voila! Back to beautiful.
The Ergo is also a really great alternative for walking with Audrey in the stroller. She tends to get a little sweaty in her car seat, but I haven’t noticed that as much when I wear her, and I also find that I can get out of the house much faster. Plus, I like to talk to her while we walk (“look, there’s a pink flower!” and “do you hear those birds singing?”) and it feels slightly less crazy to talk to her when she’s inches away than when she is in the stroller. (Slightly.)
It’s definitely an investment piece (and of course, there are LOTS of investment pieces during the pregnancy and newborn months…yikes) but I 100% think it’s worth the money, because it helps you keep baby close while still being able to get stuff done. And it’s really great quality fabric and foam, so I assume this is going to last me through her first few years and possibly and future children.
GUESS WHAT? I have an Ergobaby Organic Bundle of Joy to give away! I know, it’s crazy town! The Ergo company is fabulous and absolutely loves the blogging community, so they have offered to give one carrier away (winner chooses between the dark chocolate and navy colors).
